This Is Our School
Maunula Secondary School and Helsinki School of Mathematics (Maunulan yhteiskoulu ja Helsingin matematiikkalukio) offers education for students in lower secondary school between ages 13-16 (grades 7-9), as well as for students in upper secondary school. Our school has a combined number of 800 students, of which half study in our lower secondary school and half in our upper secondary school.
In Maunula lower secondary school, students can receive their education either in Finnish or in English, since our school also has English-speaking classes. In our upper secondary school all tuition is in Finnish. Our upper secondary school, or lukio, has two study programmes from which the students can choose. They can study in what we call yleislukio that gives education according to the Finnish National Core Curriculum for Upper Secondary Schools. However, students can also apply to our math-specialised upper secondary school (matematiikkalukio) where they will receive the same general education that they would in our yleislukio, but they will also receive a wider education and knowledge in mathematics and sciences.
Our school is a private school that offers free education according to the Finnish National Core Curriculum both in the lower secondary and upper secondary schools. Our school operates under the ownership of Viipurin Reaalikoulu Oy.
A Brief Look Back
Our Lower Secondary School
In our lower secondary school, we have grades 7-9 with approximately 400 students. These students are between ages 13-16. We offer education both in Finnish and English. Our school gives basic education to all students that live in Maunula region, but students that live outside Maunula, can apply to our school as well.
In addition to the basic education that is given according to the National Core Curriculum, students can apply to study in our mathematics, sports, or English-speaking classes. Mathematic and sports classes are taught in Finnish, English-speaking classes are taught mainly in English. Students that study in the mathematics or sports classes will have additional lessons in these subjects throughout secondary school. Students that study in the English-speaking classes will have a strong emphasis on English and Finnish language skills throughout their studies. However, even though their education will mostly be in English, their curriculum will still follow the Finnish Core Curriculum.
If students wish to study in our mathematics, sports, or English-speaking classes, they need to apply to these classes separately. Additionally, all students applying to these classes will take part in entrance exams that are held in February.

Our Upper Secondary School
Our upper secondary school (lukio) has two units: Maunula Upper Secondary School (Maunulan yhteiskoulun lukio) and Helsinki School of Mathematics (Helsingin matematiikkalukio). Maunula Upper Secondary School offers education in Finnish according to the National Core Curriculum for Upper Secondary Schools. Helsinki School of Mathematics follows the national core curriculum, but it has a special focus on mathematics and science, and its own course selection in these subjects.
All our upper secondary school students can choose from a wide selection of courses, especially in arts, sciences, and sports. We offer our students the opportunity to continue in the same study paths that they have started in our lower secondary school. Our math school focuses especially on mathematics and sciences, and has the widest selection of math courses in Finland.
Students apply to both schools in Yhteishaku. Students that apply to Maunula Upper Secondary School will be selected according to their grade point average for the theoretical subjects in the basic education certificate. Students that apply to Helsinki School of Mathematics will additionally take part in an entrance exam, and will be selected according to both their success in the exam and their grade point average in the basic education certificate.
